Dad’s Niceville High School Letter
By: Robert Helms
No one in the Family knew anything of this story until Uncle Jack showed up at Mom’s house one morning with Daddy’s Letter. Daddy had never mentioned it to anyone.
My Dad was always generous to a fault. He would give any friend anything he could to help them.
My Parents had a small restaurant in Niceville called the City Café. Dad put the restaurant out of business by allowing people to run up a tab when they couldn’t pay. Dad would serve them anyway. My Parents had a small Grocery Store too. It ended the same wayy. Dad would allow people to run up a tab. When they couldn’t pay but needed some groceries, Dad would let them run up an even higher tab.
Like I said earlier, My Father was generous to a fault.
My Father died on Christmas Eve morning 1977. His funeral was on the day after Christmas. It was a very inconvenient day for most people to attend a funeral. It was held at the First Baptist Church of Niceville. The largest church in town. The church was filled to SRO, standing room only. People lined both sides of the church. The crowd at the back of the church was three people deep. The balcony was full. The lobby was full and people were even standing on the front steps of the church. It seemed that half the county had shown up. I figured half of them owed my Father money.
Then one day my Uncle Jack arrived at Mom’s house with this Niceville High School Letter “N” that he said belonged to my Father. Uncle Jack told me the story but I wanted to be sure to get the story correct so I asked him to write the story himself.
From here I will allow Uncle Jack to tell the story.
Uncle Jacks story of my Father’s Niceville High School Letter.
